For our first few shows, we will be building the SPLIT community by gathering artists who we believe capture the spirit of London’s diverse emerging scene. The shows will be curated around a wide range of styles and mediums. Over time, we hope to provide true and lasting support to the emerging artist community; as we find our feet on London’s subsidence-prone soil, we hope to share the fun.
London’s buttons are bursting at the sight of ‘emerging artists’ scrambling from chimneys, gutters and revolving doors. The rafters of London’s art world have SPLIT OPEN, wide and agape. Globs of self-professed artists and rebels congregate in pools, slurping on discount turpentine and boozing on quick-cheques. Some have been pumped through brick walled arteries; others have made their way to the surface alone, through many a clot. Their hands, clutching brush and palette, reach towards each and every fringe of the fractured global art scene, a realm that has split into at least ten pieces.
A steady flow of acrylic and oil has taken a turn upstream to Hackney Road. A modest room awaits, its white walls gasping for a moderate mix of the next new and the glorious seen-before. The room offers an exciting opportunity — one that ought to be shared. And thus, THE SPLIT GALLERY has plucked six distinguished painters to join in a celebration of the space. We believe that the works displayed are deserving of a place in the future of art; each artist is committed to a strong, evolving practice, and above all, is absolutely emerging.
